In Celebration of MLK Jr.

Writer's picture: Laura and MiguelLaura and Miguel

As Martin Luther King Jr. Day approaches (January 20th), we take time to reflect on equity, social justice, and constructive personal and community action. These are not just big ideas. When we approach these concepts with tangible steps of action, we can accomplish far-reaching positive results.

Last winter, our family volunteered with KPC Buddhist Relief to bring warm clothing to African refugees who were just arriving in the area. This year, we had the opportunity to help provide warm meals to these families. Yesterday, our family made a traditional African tilapia stew, and it was delivered (along with baguettes, fresh oranges, granola bars, English muffins, and orange marmalade) to the families, at the request of H.E. Jetsunma Ahkön Lhamo Rinpoche, director of KPC Buddhist Relief. The families we offered the fresh foods to had “immediate needs for warm food,” families who “would otherwise go without,” as Jetsunma stated. They “have no transportation” of their own and are a community that would have otherwise gone unserved.

Engaging in the act of helping and serving our community opens our hearts and minds, and we are deeply grateful for the opportunity to support and serve others. As I was raised Tibetan Buddhist, I was taught from as a very young child to not stop helping others until there is no more need. And so, as we start a fresh year, in a world where so many go without basic needs being met, our family vows to help others in whatever ways we can. We hope you will join us on this journey of compassion, kindness, empathy, and generosity for all beings.

There is one mission: To relieve suffering. Consider getting involved by volunteering or making a donation today. To quote Jetsunma from a profound and heartfelt teaching she offered, “You are so needed in a world that is hungry for love.” Let us never forget this.
